Plovdiv is the capital of the region of the same name in Bulgaria. It is the country?s second city, after Sofia.
It is in the Thracian lowlands, on the banks of the Maritsa and at the foot of the Seven Hills.
We recommend going for a stroll around the old quarter, where you will find numerous 18th and 19 th century buildings in a remarkably good condition. Exploring the town?s cobbled streets is a real treat ? these are usually inhabited by artists and artisans. The town has successfully preserved its Renaissance charm; many buildings have wooden fronts and flowers on their balconies.
The town?s main attraction is without doubt its Ancient Roman Theatre, which is still used for outdoor entertainment. We also recommend visiting Bachkovo monastery (1083), and Rila monastery (5 th century), the largest and most well know in the region.
The city is also home to numerous and varied restaurants, bars and hotels that cater for all tastes and budgets.

A nearby main thoroughfare (Kniaginia Maria Louisa Boulevard) offers good transport connections to all parts of the city. Plodiv airport can be reached by car in about 15 minutes.
