Sorry, nothing very positive. Thought the room was very shabby and the carpet was filthy. The staff were less than positive and only one member of staff (a barman) had a smile. The breakfast staff were more interested in standing around chatting than trying to help. The one good thing I could find was the quality and variation of the food at breakfast. Was actually short changed at the hotel twice and on checkout was asked to pay for goods from the mini bar that we had not used although this was resolved easily.Too many staff hanging around doing nothing but always looking for a tip. Would not go back there and will not recommend it to any one.

Staff at exchange counter gave wrong change (gave $200 canadian, given exchange for $80 canadian). Constantly shortchanged by bar star on patio bar and cafe.Concierge desk excellent.

I booked on line with Hotelopia, and when we arrived were told that we could not stay because of a problem with the water on the top floor, and we were told we had to move to another hotel. I was furious and talked to the manager through an interpreter. I had read that this happened. The manager was very rude I thought (Raul Rodriduez)and wasn't at all helpful. We eventually (although we had to fight for it ) got a free buffet dinner, and a free taxi to the airport. (which wasn't there on the day of departure and had to argue again for it 15 minutes after we had arranged for it to be there!) After all this we were shipped of to the Havanna Libre- which wasn't as good quality-but we did get the next night at the Nacional. Not the best of memeories on our last two nights in Cuba. I feel the Hotel Nacional is resting on its 'Famous people laurels', and the service isn't as good as it should be for a five star hotel. Also I feel would rather cater for lots of coach loads of people, rather than indivduals. I would suggest not staying here-but definitely go to the garden bar for a drink and have a look around the beautiful lobby-also fabulous building.

The hotel lies within metres of the nearest beach, atop a low cliff at the centre of Havana from whence wonderful views may be enjoyed out over the surrounding area. It is around 7 km to the Plaza de la Revolución whilst the old town and the congress centre are some 8 km from the hotel. The city zoo is 19km from the hotel and it is 24 km to the botanical gardens. The Expo Cuba centre is also around 24 km and it is about 37 km to the Playa del Este.
