Lille is a French city, located in the far north of the country near the border with Belgium, on the banks of the River Deûle.
The city's architecture is in the Flemish style, with colourful houses and narrow streets and boulevards. You can visit the famous flea market and antiques fair, the Braderie, or other open-air markets in the city; if you prefer, there are luxury shops of the best quality. The Lille Fine Arts Museum is one of the most important in France, and here you can see works by great artists like Rubens, Goya, Delacroix and Van Dyck. Some of the finest monuments in Lille are: Charles de Gaulle's birthplace, the Comtesse Hospice museum, the Rihour Palace, the Vielle Bourse, la Gran Garde, the Opera House, the Chamber of Commerce building, the Rang du Beauregard, the Maison Coilliot, Euralille with its modern buildings and the Hotel de Ville, where you can climb a 104-metre-tall tower for a view of the city. This was declared World Heritage in 2005.
