The city of Nimes is located in the south of France. It is the capital of the department of Gard, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. We recommend a visit to the impressive Amphitheatre of Nimes, which is a major construction dating back to the 1st century.
Nimes is also the place to see La Maison Carrée, a two-thousand-year-old Roman temple, which is one of the best preserved buildings from this time. The temple was built in honour of Caius and Lucius Caesar. The buildings possesses a great staircase that leads up to the podium, which supports six impressive grooved columns. This point also provides a good view.
You won't want to miss the Temple of Diana, a beautiful and romantic monument near the La Fontaine de Nimes Gardens (16th century). This lovely garden has many fountains and statues arranged in the French style.
