Orleans is situated towards the north of central France; it is the capital city of the department of Loiret.
It is a city with a vast history and cultural heritage, highlighted by Joan of Arc and her role in the hundred-year war. This heroic lady managed to lead the French troops that faced the English and recovered the siege city of Orleans. On the 8th of May the city celebrates Joan of Arc day, when parades take place and medieval times are relived. The spectacular Sainte Croix, with its sky-high towers, is one of the most popular places in Orleans. Inside it there is a commemorative Joan of Arch museum that displays her life and work in 10 stained-glass windows. Other attractions to enjoy are the old Hotel Groslot with its 15th century furniture and decoration or the History Museum, with monuments that are an important part of French cultural heritage.
