Athens is the largest city in Greece, as well as being its economic, political and cultural capital. It is located on the Attica Peninsula and, as one of the world's oldest cities, it is rich in archaeological remains. The most important of these is the Acropolis, where you can see the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea, the temple of Athena Nike, a museum and other sites of interest.
On your way back down, towards Plaka and Monastiraki, there are many shops with traditional Greek products, and nearby are the Lysicrates Monument, the Arch of Hadrian and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
The centre of Athens has some fine squares with many cafés, tavernas and restaurants. Here you can admire the Neoclassical architecture of the University, the Arts Academy, the Parliament, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with its famous changing of the guards, and the stadium where the first modern Olympic Games was held. Relax and take in the beautiful surroundings of the National Park, visit the ancient treasures of the National Museum and the architecture of Athens' many churches.
Kolonaki is a modern commercial area that has a funicular railway to take you to the summit of the Likavitos Hill. Remember, too, that you are close to the paradise of the Greek Islands.
