Santorini is an island in the Cyclades archipelago, off Greece in the Aegean Sea. The island got its half-moon shape when the volcano that the island once was collapsed in 1400 B.C. and half of the land mass was occupied by the sea.
It is one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations, thanks to its geological nature, its beauty and its great nightlife.
The west of the island is rocky and has impressive cliffs. It is here that you will find the capital, Thira, and the major town of Oia, with its little white houses built into the rocks. On the east coast, the towns of Kamari and Perissa have beaches of volcanic sand where you can try different water sports and enjoy the nightlife. On Santorini's highest peak is the Monastery of the Prophet Elias. You can take a ferry from the Gulf of Thira to Nea Kammeni, a small island with thermal waters. We recommend visiting the ruins of Akrotiri and the ancient city of Thira, where Phoenician, Doric, Roman and Byzantine colonisers left their mark.
