Udaipur is an Indian city located in the west of the Republic, in the state of Rajasthan.
It is a jewel of a city, surrounded by walls and built around splendid blue lakes in a valley set in the lovely Aravalli Mountains. Udaipur is full of palaces, lakes, temples and pleasant gardens.
One of the outstanding places to visit here is the City Palace, situated on the top of a picturesque hill on the shore of Lake Pichola; the palace currently houses a museum and this well worth seeing. Another place to visit is the Lake Palace, or Jag Niwas. A glance at this extraordinary building makes it seem as if it is floating on the lake, as this impressive palace takes up the whole island on which it is built.
For many years the palace was the summer residence of the sovereigns of Udaipur. It dates back to the year 1746 and today it is a hotel. The visitor is also recommended to visit the Garden of the Maidens, or Shahelyon ki Bari. This is a lovely garden on the edge of Lake Fateh Sagar.
