Assisi is an Italian city in the province of Perugia, in the region of Umbria. It is also one of Italy's important Episcopal seats. The town is located on the lower slopes of Mount Subasio near the Topino and Chiascio rivers.
St Francis was born here and in 1208 he founded the Franciscans. Later on, St Clare created the female branch of this religious order, which was to be known as the Poor Clares. The tomb of St Francis is to be found in the lower crypt of the church of San Francesco which is a major centre of worship for pilgrims and residents, and much visited by tourists to the region.
As well as this church, there are other important religious buildings: Santa Clara, which conserves some beautiful medieval paintings as well as the relics of St Clare; the church of St Peter; the cathedral, dedicated to St Rufinus; and the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, among other churches and religious centres.
