Bergamo is a city in the northern Italian region of Lombardy, at the feet of the Italian Alps. It is very close to Milan and is divided into the upper medieval town and the lower modern town.
The upper town has steep cobbled streets and walled areas. It can be reached by a funicular and its heart and soul is Piazza Vecchia, which has a lovely old bell tower. Nearby is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colleoni Chapel, the Palace of Reason and the Baptistry. This whole scene is majestically framed by the snow-capped Alps in the winter.
At the ski resorts of Val Seriana and Val Brembana you will be able to try just about any winter sport.
It is traditional to take an appetiser at about six in the evening, and you can try different mouthfuls, similar to Spanish tapas, at the city?s bars.
