Saltillo is the capital city of the Mexican state of Coahuila. The city's historical centre is at Ojo de Agua and Mexico square, where you can find the Bird Museum, the splendid Santiago Cathedral, which combines a number of styles, and, opposite this, the pink Palacio de Gobierno (Government Palace), where you can admire some murals by Almaraz and Tarazona. Also of interest is Plaza de Armas, surrounded by Colonial-style buildings such as the Saltillo casino, the Coahuilense Cultural Institute, the Recinto de Juárez House and the Casa Purcell mansion. Another point of interest is the picturesque Alameda Zaragoza. This is the largest park in the city and includes pleasant gardens, fountains, monuments and even a library. For some action, go to the San Lorenzo canyon, where you can go abseiling, or to the Monterreal Forests for skiing on artificial snow. Do not miss a visit to the Saltillo Theatre, a superb building with Greek and Roman motifs on its facade.
The place boasts a large number of restaurants, bars and craft shops with the traditional hand looms. Pay a visit, too, to the Juarez Market, enjoy the busy nightlife and take a stroll along the Venustiano Carranza and Jesús Valdés Sánchez boulevards.
