Maastricht is a town in the Netherlands, set on both banks of the Meuse River. It is the capital of the province of Limburg.
One of the town's great attractions is the main square, which is where the town's 16th-century basilica, dedicated to St Servatius, is found.
Maastricht gained fame when, in the 1990s, the Treaty on European Union was signed here and so it is often given the name of the town, and called the Maastricht Treaty.
One of the city's finest architectural monuments is the Saint Servatius bridge. This important bridge is the oldest in the Netherlands, dating from the 12th century. As an important river crossing, it initially gave the town the prosperity that it still has.
If you enjoy cultural and artistic activities then some good places to see are: the Bonnefanten Museum, which has an excellent archaeological collection; the Natural History Museum; and the old residence of the Dukes of Brabant, known as the Spaans Gouvernement Museum.
You can also see the city walls, sections of which date back to 1229, including the city entrance known as the ""Gate of Hell"" or Helpoort. It is a lovely, leafy area that is ideal for a stroll.
