The High Tatras National Park is the pride of Slovakia. Here we also find the highest peak of the country Gerlachovský peak (2655 metres high above sea level), once named after the Emperor Francis Joseph or Generalissimo Stalin. The Kriván Mountain stands for the national symbol. It received the name after its characteristic shape [shifted = krivý]. The granite Tatra peaks rise proudly on the borders between Slovakia and Poland and often cover their faces with the veil of clouds. Prehistoric glaciers have formed the deep valleys featuring the alpine flora and fauna. The glaciers melted down thousands years ago, but their water has been kept in the mountain lakes - tarns. The Tatra settlements on the southern side of mountains developed in the second half of the 19th century. Then the convenient railway connection was built and the guests from cities could thus come here for their summer stays. Nowadays, the Tatras are opened to all and offer to their visitors a wide range of accommodation facilities.
