The city of Murcia, together with Molina de Segura, Alcantarilla, El Palmar, Beniaján, Cabezo de Torres and Santomera, among others, make up the metropolitan area of Murcia, located on the River Segura in southeastern Spain.
One noteworthy building is the Cathedral of Santa Maria, in the Cardinal Belluga square. It is a combination of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Don't miss either the Bishop's Palace, the Glorieta, which has traditionally been the centre of the city, and the medieval old quarter, home to a number of Baroque churches built on original mosques. Other musts for visitors are the Santa Clara la Real monastery, the Santo Domingo square, the Romea theatre, the Murcia Casino, the Almudí and San Esteban palaces and their beautiful gardens as well as the Malecón, a popular walkway. Visit the large number of museums that Murcia has and become steeped in the history of the place.
Less than 5km from the city, in the El Valle National Park, you can go trekking, climbing and enjoy a great view of the city from the heights. You can also see more historical monuments, such as the Fuensanta Sanctuary.
