Zaragoza, also called Saragossa in English, is one of the most important cities in Spain. It is the capital of the Autonomous Community of Aragon and of the province of Zaragoza. The city is on the banks of the Ebro, Huerva and Gállego rivers, as well as the Imperial Canal of Aragon, in the middle of a large valley. The city has inherited the legacy of the cultures and peoples that have inhabited it at different periods in history, with traces of Roman, Jewish, Christian and Muslim culture all evident, making a heady mix that is the essence of Zaragoza.
The city is an important centre of Mudéjar art, an attribute that has gained it a place on UNESCO?s list of World Heritage Sites, the most important example of this style being the Wall of la Parroquieta.
Among the city?s most important sights we should highlight: the Cathedral of San Salvador (La Seo), which was the first Christian cathedral in Zaragoza, the Aljafería Palace (11th century), the Mudéjar Palace of Pedro IV, the Palace of the Catholic Kings and the Torreón del Trovador tower (where Verdi set his famous opera).
