Hotels in Berne The city of Bern is the federal capital of Switzerland. It is set on the River Aar, and, with its well-preserved medieval architecture, it is listed as UNESCO World Heritage.   It has a truly impressive setting: the river winds around a long hill, on the top of which is the old town of Bern.   One of the city's most important monuments is the Gothic cathedral. It can be climbed, and the views from the tower are spectacular.   Another traditional place for families to visit is the Bärengraben, or Bear Pit, where you can see some magnificent bears, a traditional animal of the zone.   No visitor should leave Bern without seeing: the lovely Rathaus, or town hall; the Federal palace, seat of the Government and the Parliament, with its impressive dome; and the Zytglogge, a fantastic city clock located in Bern's very lively centre.   Bern is an enchanting place.
