The city of Chiang Mai is the capital of the province of Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand.
The city is situated on the banks of the river Ping, the biggest tributary of the Chao Phraya river, one of the most important rivers in Thailand. Chiang Mai is the second largest city in the country and located about 800 kilometres north of Bangkok, in a stunning mountain landscape. The main centre of Chiang Mai is the historical district, an area surrounded by temples, old walls and moats originally constructed for defence.
Nevertheless, it is a modern city with major infrastructure, full of shops, excellent restaurants, and large hotels, a marked contrast that is part of the charm of Chiang Mai. Among the most visited temples in the city, the following stand out: Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep (dates back to 1383) is the most famous in the area; the location of the temple (on a hill) allows you to get fantastic views of the city. The Wat Chiang Man temple is the oldest in the city.
