Kanchanaburi is a Thai town located 150 kilometres from Bangkok, on the border with Burma. It is a wooded, mountainous area, crossed by the Burma Railway, built by the Japanese during the Second World War. The bridge over the River Kwai is the place's traditional postcard image, since it was this that gave its name to the film. The town has many restaurants, and between the bridge and the city centre is the War Cemetery. The mountain landscapes of Kanchanaburi house many jungle hotels, where the most adventurous can enjoy some tropical hiking. The Thungyai National Park has been declared Natural Heritage. Here you can stay in one of the exotic floating bungalows on the River Kwai. A popular activity is the balsa raft trips along the river, and you can also have an elephant ride.
There is much more: the ethnic settlements of the Mon and the Karen and the many waterfalls of Thailand's central region. At the Nam Tok waterfall there is a Buddhist monument in homage to those who died building the railway.
